Here is the recipe:
- install “tuxguitar” package
- install “timidity” package

Maybe your sound card supports MIDI files better than mine, so you might go with hardware support for playing MIDI files. However, software sequencers do provide better sound and sometimes they are the only choice, as in my case.

For some reason though, timidity daemon isn’t started with boot up, so I had to start it manually. Before launching tuxguitar, launch following command from terminal:

timidity -iA -B2,8 -Os -EFreverb=0

Then run tuxguitar and select Timidity port from the settings as shown in the second picture.

The reason behind this is some (I’m not an expert in this field) internet protocol changes, i.e. defaulting to IPv6 by some means. Well, that’s nice, but it broke the damn Eclipse I can’t live without! Seems like Debian folks don’t care too much about Java apps

Anyway, the bug is reported for a long time and apparently it is fixed in OpenJDK (though some user complained about not being fixed): http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=560044

Long story short: if you experience similar problems with Eclipse, just add the following line to your eclipse.ini file:

-Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true

Since that fixes only your Eclipse app (and nothing else) you should probably change the global setting via following commands, but I’m not sure what else gets affected and how smart is it to mendle with the system, but anyway:

# sed -i 's/net.ipv6.bindv6only\ =\ 1/net.ipv6.bindv6only\ =\ 0/' \
/etc/sysctl.d/bindv6only.conf && invoke-rc.d procps restart

Wowd hotlist for Sports

That is exactly what end users can expect from Wowd. The list of popular web sites (“hotlist”) refreshes from time to time and changes incrementally by default each 60 seconds, but you can modify that according to your wish or internet provider data plan. On top of the screen, we have a list of nine categories, including “All” which combines all popular links together. Category bar can be scrolled with touch motion. The sliding drawer, on the right edge of the screen, can be pulled to the left side, and then it shows you the trending topics and searches in the selected category. If you click on the topic, search will be executed and you will see (by default) the best fresh results. If you wish, you can change whether you prefer high popularity over freshness, by using settings.

MyPages is simply a log of web sites you visited with Wowd. On the PC version, it is one of my favorites (guess why), but the Android version is far from what PC version provides. On the other hand, hotlist and search is 1-1 compatible with the Wowd web site, which is cool. Anyways, MyPages can be accessed from the main screen by tapping the “Menu” button. From there you can visit a page, or remove some/all items.

There is a lot of space for improvements, which will surely come if Android users show interest for this app. Personally, I’ve enjoyed making it, with great deal of help from my colleagues, in the past few months. Android platform is… well, to me it is very good. Java, Eclipse, ADT – the tools are just great and programming on Android thrilling experience compared to programming for iPhone! Sorry Apple folks

Please, if you are unsure of what you are doing, don’t follow this guide and cry to me later if you brick your phone. This guide is for HTC Magic 32A, and tested only on models available in Serbia.

You will need to download a couple of files, and the most important thing is the first one – Amon RA recovery image. I really can’t explain now how much this image eases the flashing of Android phones. Also, RA comes with Nandroid backup (so you can always “undo” if something goes wrong) and SD card formatting utilities. Anyway, on this forum thread you can read which recovery image is suitable for your phone – for mine, it was the recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.7.0H.img

Now, before downloading ROMs and other stuff, lets first flash that recovery image to your phone. This used to be done via adb utility, but someone has created a phone application that exploits bluetooth buffer overflow, so the image can be flashed via phone. Copy the recovery image to your SD card, name it shortly, say “recovery.img”, and then (on your phone) run the FlashRec application. It should say here that you have a “EBI1″ phone, don’t continue if it says otherwise and skip this tutorial coooompletely! First, do a backup (because your phone already has a recovery image, but it is not this good), and then in the text box type /sdcard/recovery.img and the click Flash button.

Suppose that step ended successfully (if it didn’t, don’t ask me what to do about it, GIYF). What you have now is a special recovery image with the root access to your device. Recovery image is started by shutting down your phone, and then pressing the green Home button and red Power button together. Press it, and keep them pressed until screen turns on. If you’ve done everything right, soon you should have a recovery screen (somewhere in the bottom should be written “recovery image 1.7″ or similar).

First, do a nandroid backup. You will see it in the menu. Then restart your phone (normal way), connect it to USB and copy the nandroid folder from your phone’s SD card to your computer, so that you can always go back if you screw up something with roms.

Now is the time to download ROMs. I used Cyanogen 5.0.7 ROM which is Android 2.1 codenamed Eclair. It is uber fast and I haven’t found a single bug yet. There are four files that need to be downloaded. First, the rooted  Android 1.6 ROM from HTC. Then, the cyanogen mod ROM, followed by a new kernel, and then finally google apps, which are for some reason not included in cyanogen ROM mentioned before. There are other ROMs (including Cyanogen’s) which include google apps, but I won’t discuss them here now. Copy all four zips to the SD card.

Reboot your phone to recovery mode. From wipe menu, choose reset factory settings. Then wipe your dalvik-cache. Since this is your first flashing (I assume so in this guide), you don’t need to wipe anything else. After that, return to the main menu, and apply the downloaded ROMs using “flash zip” option from the menu, in the order you downloaded them, that is:

1. HTC_ADP_1.6
2. update-cm-5.0.7
3. bc-5.0.7
4. gapps-ds

Reboot your phone, wait a little while until dalvik-cache is recreated, and enjoy your new operating system

Debian Conference is organized once a year, and Sarajevo participated in the DebConf7 bid, but the city of Edinburgh won that year. This year, DebConf is being held in New York City.

The government of Republic of Srpska, with the prime minister Milorad Dodik, has given green light and financial support for the oncoming event, which gives Banja Luka a great opportunity to win the bid. Other bidders are Germany and the city of Munich, which is known to be as one of the first cities in Europe which fully adopted GNU/Linux in government and civil services.

The problem is with SWT/JFace GTK implementation. Anyway, the GTK in Karmic has been changed which resulted in backward incompatibility with the SWT implementation. To temporarily override new settings, you simply need to launch eclipse with GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS=true parameter. Here is a little script that you can put in your eclipse application folder that will do the trick. You can also create a desktop launcher to the script.
